What happens with a separation involving discs L2 and L3?

I was rear-ended in a car accident, the X-Ray docs took X-Rays of the wrong part of my back, over a month and a half later I got the correct X-Rays (after physical therapy and muscle medication) and the nurse let it out that there is a separation with my discs, L2 and L3 ( I believe, one could've been L4) then refused to elaborate. What does this mean and what do I have to do for treatment? Someone said surgery, that scares me,
