Guy help...... please??? ex advice?

we were best friends a year, then he asked me to be his gf, then he said we were moving too fast, it was bad timing, then we decided to stay friends. he said more than anything he wanted his best friend back. at first he tried to make things as they were and i was awkward. later i was trying and now hes the awkward one. hes cold, distant, and avoiding. i feel he ignores me at times. it hurts, since i see him every other day. we go to the same church and his friends are my friends. were in the same group. guy, since youre guys, i ask, why does he do this, when i try :( also, him and i are different, but still loved each other. however could that have been the reason he broke up with me? things were just so great. btw im 22 hes 26... thanks
