Can a guy want you out of his life for a little while?

He said he wanted me out of his life for awhile.. we used to be a couple, we weren't official, but i've known him most my life. And we care soo much about eachother, he told me i ment the world to him, you know? The usual love thing. But i have been rough on him the 6 months we've been" off" and we remained friends until today.. he decided he wanted me out until he wanted me back in it. He's very busy. And said he doesn't have tim to comit.. should i give him time? He obviously wants space. He doesn't want to fall for me again yet it seems.. i don't know what todd, advice? Experience? Pleeease help ill be so greatful!
